Greg and Kay Silkenson have lived in Elgin for over 25 years.
Their company – TALKING WOOD – was created when Kay inherited
antique Long Leaf Pine boards from her grandparents’ home in San
Antonio.  Many interior trim boards were left over after remodeling
was complete.  Most of the wood is coated on one side with many
layers of paint.

The Long Leaf Pine wood from the old family home used in their
pieces date back to the late 1880’s; any square nails used in the art
work are also from the original wood.  The first items we made with
the wood were crosses for gifts and to donate to non-profit auctions.

Greg has been involved with many construction projects in the past,
including cabinet making, home construction/remodeling, Habitat for
Humanity and construction mission trips to Central America and
Mexico.

In July 2004 Greg began a two year furniture design and building
apprenticeship program which will allow them to expand their wood
working into additional areas.  After completing his apprenticeship,
Greg has been working full time at his home shop building furniture.

Kay has worked in Elgin for a local attorney since 1984.

Talking Wood pieces have been entered in the '03, 04, '05 and '06
Pearls Before Swine Art Show in Elgin, the '04 and '05 Central Texas
Wood Artisans Show in Austin and the '05 Texas Furniture Show in
Kerrville, TX.
